This Principals Appreciation Month, Hamilton County Schools proudly recognizes Dr. Martha McMillan, principal of East Ridge Elementary School (ERES). Dr. McMillan has devoted 15 years to serving Hamilton County students. Now in her fifth year at ERES, two as assistant principal and three as principal, she works to lead a supportive, stable environment where students and teachers feel valued and inspired.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. McMillan pursued her calling to education at Berry College in nearby Rome, where she earned her undergraduate degree. Through a partnership between Berry College and Hamilton County Schools, students who completed their student teaching in the district were guaranteed a teaching contract after graduation. This program brought her to East Lake Elementary in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she later began her career as a teacher. She then went on to earn advanced degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
Over the years, Dr. McMillan has served at Clifton Hills Elementary, Hixson Elementary, East Lake Elementary, and now East Ridge Elementary. This school year, her goal is to deepen personalization, community, and school pride. “We want school to be a place of belonging, somewhere that kids are seen and accepted for who they are,” she said. Under her leadership, ERES has launched a house system to strengthen student engagement, established their PTA, and hosted community gatherings, including Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations and the beloved Thanksgiving family lunch.
Dr. McMillan is equally focused on empowering her teachers. Through regular staff shout-outs, recognition events, and open communication, she works to ensure her team feels valued and supported. “We really push to make sure that this is a place where they want to come to work,” she said.
“When our teachers feel appreciated and supported, that filters down to our kids. I really appreciate the people. I couldn't do the work without any of them. It's a team effort.”
These efforts have produced measurable results. ERES’s attendance rates are up, and chronic absenteeism has dropped by more than 4%. When she arrived, the school faced high teacher turnover, with around 50% retention. Today, that number has climbed to 87% retention, reflecting the strong community and culture she and her team have worked to create.
For Dr. McMillan, the most rewarding part of her job remains simple. “All the hugs from the kids,” she said. “That means they’re happy to be here too. They’re happy to see all of us.” She and her administrative team use rolling desks to be visible and easily navigate hallways throughout the day. This helps to foster stronger relationships and a more connected school community by engaging with students during transitions, interacting with teachers, and observing daily activities.
As we honor Principal Dr. Martha McMillan during Principals Appreciation Month, we celebrate her inspiring leadership and commitment to helping every student and staff member learn, grow, and belong. Thank you, Dr. McMillan, for all you do!
