Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²)

At Hamilton County Schools, we want every student to succeed. Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²) helps us provide the right support at the right time so every student can keep learning and growing.

RTI² is a system that helps teachers identify when students need extra support or additional challenges. Some students may need help catching up, while others may be ready for more advanced learning. RTI² helps schools meet students where they are while keeping all students working toward grade-level expectations.

RTI² has three levels, or tiers, of support:

Tier I:

High-quality instruction that every student receives in the classroom.

Tier II:

Extra support for students who need additional practice or instruction.

Tier III:

More intensive, individualized support for students with the greatest learning needs.

Teachers regularly monitor each student’s progress. As students grow and their needs change, the support they receive can also change.

One important part of RTI² is student assessment. Assessments help teachers understand what students know, where they may need additional support, and how to plan instruction. Learn more about assessments on this page. (LINK)

As part of the screening process, students are also screened for characteristics of dyslexia. This helps schools identify students who may need specialized, research-based instruction and support as early as possible.

Families as Partners

Families are an important part of the RTI² process. We are committed to keeping you informed and working with you to support your child’s success.

What you can expect:

  • You’ll be informed.
If your child begins or ends a Tier II or Tier III intervention, your school will notify you.
  • You’ll receive regular progress updates.
If your child is receiving intervention services, you’ll receive a progress report included in your child’s standard progress report so you can see how your child is growing.
  • You can ask questions at any time.
You may request to meet with school staff to review your child’s progress and learning data.
  • Some plans require your permission.
Schools provide interventions based on student data. However, if your child qualifies for an Individualized Learning Plan for Characteristics of Dyslexia (ILP-D), your consent is required before the plan is finalized. If you choose not to sign the ILP-D, your child will still receive dyslexia-specific intervention through a standard student intervention plan, as required by Tennessee guidelines.

Working together, we can help every student build the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
